The Cowboys have had a defensive bent to their draft with defensive end Taco Charlton and cornerbacks Chidobe Awuzie and Jourdan Lewis as their top three picks. That could continue as the Cowboys move on to Day 3 for their final four picks.

The Dallas Cowboys had to change the phone numbers to their draft room after it was somehow put on social media Thursday, according to executive vice president Stephen Jones said. The team began to receive calls from the public on Thursday but quickly notified the NFL and the other teams of their new number to call in an attempt to work out potential trades. "It didn't happen until late," executive vice president Stephen Jones said with a laugh.

Jerry Jones said the Cowboys are not moving veteran cornerback Orlando Scandrick. "I don't know who started that," he said. "That's completely erroneous. We heard things but that's never been the case. No one in this organization has ever insinuated or implied that we'd do anything with Orlando other than have him on the field."

Cowboys third-round pick Jourdan Lewis believes the misdemeanor domestic violence charges against him will be dropped, "and I'll be exonerated completely. I'm completely innocent," he said. Lewis said the charges hurt his draft standing. He believes he was a first-round talent because "I don't believe anybody can do the things I do as well as I do."

Twelve cornerbacks were drafted before Jourdan Lewis, but few of them are as decorated. He was a Jim Thorpe Award finalist and consensus All-American in 2016.

Cowboys add talented CB Jourdan Lewis in third round

Mel Kiper Jr. sees the former Michigan corner as a key component for an NFL team in the slot corner position.

Matt Bowen ESPN Staff Writer

Jourdan Lewis should project as a slot cornerback for the Cowboys. Lateral speed and man-coverage ability. Quick to transition to the ball. And Lewis is going to be aggressive vs. the run game. Limited size (5-foot-10, 188 pounds), but the talent is there to match up inside.

Dan Graziano ESPN Staff Writer

The Cowboys needed to make this draft about defense, on the front and back ends. Their first three picks are a DE and two cornerbacks. Jourdan Lewis fell to the late third round due to off-field character issue, but could be their nickel CB as a rookie.

Todd Archer ESPN Staff Writer

For the first time since 1983, the Cowboys have selected defensive players in the first, second and third rounds by taking Michigan cornerback Jourdan Lewis. Lewis was a two-year starter at Michigan, two-time All-Big 10 pick and had six interceptions in his career, but it comes with questions. He has been charged with one count of misdemeanor domestic violence after an incident with a girlfriend in March. The case is scheduled to go to trial in July.

Defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli and passing game coordinator/linebackers coach Matt Eberflus are on the draft room camera. Might the Cowboys make it three for three on defense? Safety?

ESPN Stats and Information

Chidobe Awuzie plays the game with rare physicality for a defensive back. He totaled a whopping nine sacks and 26 tackles for loss in his college career.

The Cowboys continued to address their defense, following up the selection of defensive end Taco Charlton in the first round with Colorado cornerback Chidobe Awuzie. A four-year starter, he had three interceptions, 27 pass deflections, three forced fumbles, eight sacks and 19 tackles for loss in his last two years. With the losses of Brandon Carr and Morris Claiborne in free agency, the Cowboys have a ready-made corner with some position flexibility.

Cowboys land CB Chidobe Awuzie

Needing reinforcements in the secondary, Dallas got it in the second round with the Colorado cornerback, whom Mel Kiper Jr. thinks has the much-needed skill set to defend against bubble screens and short passes.

Chidobe Awuzie, Cordrea Tankersley and Fabian Moreau are three cornerbacks who visited The Star before the draft remaining as the Cowboys' pick at No. 60 approaches.

With 10 picks remaining before the Cowboys select at No. 60, defensive back, six defensive backs have gone off the board. They said a corner would be available but the names are running out.

Four of the Cowboys' national visitors have been picked in the first 10 selections of the second round: Kevin King, Malik McDowell, Curtis Samuel and Marcus Williams. Cornerbacks remain.
