Stern: Kupchak 'panic' ended Paul-to-LAL deal

Former NBA commissioner David Stern said that the infamous proposed 2011 deal that would have sent Chris Paul to the Lakers could have been reworked, but fell apart when then-GM Mitch Kupchak "panicked."

The Lakers are in the process of finalizing a deal to hire Miles Simon as a player development coach, a league source confirms to ESPN. Simon would replace former Lakers player development coach Theo Robertson, who left after one season to become an assistant coach for his alma mater, the California Golden Bears. Like Lakers coach Luke Walton, Simon is an Arizona alum. Simon served as an assistant coach on Arizona's staff and recently was a college basketball analyst for ESPN. The Los Angeles Times first reported that the Lakers were in the process of adding Simon to their staff.

Boston Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge said Thursday that Lonzo Ball has informed the Celtics he will not work out for them prior to the NBA draft. Appearing on Boston sports radio 98.5 the Sports Hub, Ainge said it's not an ideal situation with the Celtics eager to evaluate all top talent while owning the No. 1 pick but noted that the Celtics have drafted players that didn't work out for them in the past.

The Lakers have announced the hiring of former personal trainer Gunnar Peterson, who has worked with professional athletes across many sports, as their Director of Strength and Endurance Training, a new position. "From his time in college at Duke University until now, Gunnar has pursued excellence in training and fitness," Lakers General Manager Rob Pelinka said in a news release. "Gunnar is a true pioneer and visionary at his craft, and will bring a new mentality to our weight room which we are all very excited about. Since Magic [Johnson] and I have worked with Gunnar in the past, we have a strong relationship." The team's previous head strength and conditioning coach, Tim DiFrancesco, recently resigned after six seasons with the team.
