Strong comments from Lakers president of basketball operations Magic Johnson on their recent trade that sent D'Angelo Russell, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2015 draft, to Brooklyn: "D'Angelo is an excellent player. He has the talent to be an All-Star. We want to thank him for what he did for us. But what I needed was a leader. I needed somebody also that can make the other players better and also [somebody] that players want to play with."

Eastern Washington's Jacob Wiley has agreed to a 2-way contract with the Brooklyn Nets, league sources confirm. Wiley played wellon the workout circuit before the draft, impressing teams with his intensity and relentless motor. The 6-7 wing is incredibly athletic and has shown the ability to defend multiple positions during his workouts. He was considered one of the hidden gems in this year's class. Could turn out to be a very wise investment by Sean Marks & Co. Wiley's signing was first reported by CBS Sports.

NBA draft grades: Nets earn average marks

Jarrett Allen (No. 22) is the heir apparent to Brook Lopez, but they couldn't be more different. Luckily, Brooklyn has plenty of time to see if he pans out as it builds around D'Angelo Russell.

Nets take Vezenkov

The Nets selected 6-9 Cyprus F Aleksandar Vezenkov with the No. 57 overall pick (second round) in Thursday's NBA draft. In his second season with FC Barcelona in 2016-17, the 21-year-old averaged 7.5 points in 18.4 minutes and posted a .577 field goal percentage.

The 31st pick belongs to the Hornets now, after they acquired it from the Hawks in the Dwight Howard trade. It was originally traded from Brooklyn to Atlanta way back in 2012, as part of the Joe Johnson sign-and-trade deal.

With the No. 27 overall pick, the Nets selected Kyle Kuzma (F, Utah). but don't get attached to him, Brooklyn fans. This is the pick that's going to the Lakers in the agreed-upon trade that will send Brook Lopez to Los Angeles, with D'Angelo Russell and Timofey Mozgov coming to Brooklyn.

Nets select Jarrett Allen No. 22. Allen is one of 2 players from the University of Texas to be drafted in the first round in the last 5 seasons (Myles Turner, 2015). He was 1 of 2 players in the Big 12 to average at least 13 points and 8 rebounds last season.

With the No. 22 overall pick, the Nets selected Jarrett Allen (F, Texas). Brooklyn – which would've had the No. 1 overall pick, if not for the pick swap that was part of the Kevin Garnett/Paul Pierce trade – picked up this selection from the Wizards in a trade back in February.

Jarrett Allen is 15th overall in ESPN's analytic draft model. 17% chance he will be at least a starter level player.

Lopez was one of Brooklyn's best

The 29-year-old center was traded to the Lakers on Tuesday after nine seasons with the Nets, with whom he became one of the most prolific players in team history.

Chris Forsberg ESPN Staff Writer

With the Lakers and Nets making a deal today, it's interesting to note that Boston's future is tied a bit to both teams. The Celtics could own both teams' first-round picks in 2018 (the Nets' pick for certain; the Lakers' pick via Philly, if it lands between spots 2-5). Tuesday's deal seemingly weakens the Nets next season and could aid Boston's chance of getting another glitzy pick. If the Lakers improve, Boston can turn its attention to the 2019 Sacramento pick (top 1 protected) it will receive instead.
