Keller grits one out in AFL

Pirates prospect Mitch Keller allowed only two runs (one earned) despite serving up nine hits in four innings for the Glendale Desert Dogs of the Arizona Fall League on Wednesday. The 21-year-old picked up his fourth AFL win and sports a 1.52 ERA in the hitter-friendly league.


Pirates: MLB to discipline Latin American scouting head

The Pittsburgh Pirates say Major League Baseball intends to discipline their director of Latin American scouting for rules violations, and the team announced it will not renew Rene Gayo's contract when it expires next month.

Keller named AFL Pitcher of the Week

Pirates top pitching prospect Mitch Keller earned the nod after firing five innings of shutout ball while allowing just one hit for the Arizona Fall League's Glendale Desert Dogs last Monday. The right-hander has pitched at least three innings in each of his AFL starts and has allowed only three earned runs and four walks in 15 2/3 innings. Opponents are batting .151 against him this fall.

Ranking baseball's 2019 free agents: Andrew McCutchen

McCutchen didn't bounce back to his peak level, and much of his 2017 value came in June and July, when he tore it up. He'll be viewed strictly as a corner outfielder in free agency.

Pirates extend coaching staff through 2019

The Pittsburgh Pirates announced Thursday that manager Clint Hurdle's coaching staff has been extended through the 2019 season. That includes: Kimera Bartee (first base, outfield/baserunning), Jeff Branson (hitting), Joey Cora (third base), Tom Prince (bench), Euclides Rojas (bullpen), Ray Searage (pitching) and Dave Jauss.
