Rockies' wild-card grip slipping?

Arizona is all but locked into a spot, but Colorado has opened the window after being in position all season. FiveThirtyEight's metrics give the Brewers about 3-to-1 odds to claim the final wild-card berth, with an outside chance for the Cardinals to sneak in.

David Schoenfield ESPN Senior Writer

The Brewers aren't gaining ground on the Cubs, who have won seven in a row, but they have gained ground on the Rockies. It was a bit of a bad-luck loss for Colorado. The Giants beat the Rockies with a run in the ninth, thanks to an infield hit, a bunt single and an opposite-field groundball. The Brewers (8-2 in their past 10 games) are now just a game behind the Rockies for the second wild card. With the Cardinals lurking 3.5 back.

Your guide to season's final two weeks: The NL MVP race

Among all the names in contention, perhaps Nolan Arenado has the best chance to do something dramatic in the final days of the season to help the Rockies clinch a playoff spot and boost his candidacy.

There's always an out-of-nowhere pitcher responsible for winning fantasy baseball owners their championships. I nominate German Marquez, whose three matchups currently align as @SF, @SD, LAD. He's 26.3 percent owned in ESPN leagues and is unlikely to be a popular add, criticized as "fatigued" for his poor past two outings. I trust Marquez's underrated stuff taking charge in these final two weeks.

Carlos Gonzalez could see bigger payday with big October

Next time someone tells you that hitters always have big walk years, make sure to point CarGo out to them. The outfielder doesn't have much time left to redeem himself; he's off to a good start in September.

NLDS forecast: All-West showdown

With the Dodgers headed toward compiling the National League's best record, it appears their Division Series opponents will be the wild-card survivors from their own division. They haven't fared all that well this season against either the Diamondbacks or the Rockies.
