Tony La Russa and Dave Dombrowski are old friends, but La Russa isn't interested in managing Red Sox — or any other team. "Passed the managerial baton," La Russa wrote in an e-mail. "I'm done." The Hall of Fame manager announced Wednesday he will leave his position in the Diamondbacks front office when his contract expires at month's end. La Russa, 73, hasn't managed since 2011 with the Cardinals.

Owens rebounds in AFL

After a rough Arizona Fall League season debut (five walks in one inning), Henry Owens bounced back by allowing just one run in four innings for the Peoria Javelinas on Wednesday. He walked two and struck out two. Fellow Red Sox farmhand Michael Chavis went 0-for-4 -- his first hitless performance in Arizona. He's sporting a .323 average through seven games.

Here's what Hanley Ramírez said to ESPN after his shoulder surgery: "I'm doing great; it was just a little thing, a bit of a cleanup to have a better swing. It was just a small thing and I'll be ready for spring training."

Boston's Rodriguez, Ramirez undergo surgeries

Boston's Hanley Ramirez, who underwent shoulder surgery Tuesday, is expected to be ready for the start of next season, but Red Sox pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez may not be ready for the mound until April.

Red Sox left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez had right knee patellofemoral ligament reconstruction that will keep him from pitching for 6 months, the team has announced.

High praise from Astros ace Dallas Keuchel: "The Red Sox are the most knowledgeable group of hitters that I've ever pitched against. That's a compliment to their coaching staff, to their front office, to getting them ready, to the players to having a game plan."

Hanley Ramirez is having surgery on his left shoulder, the Red Sox slugger announced Tuesday via Twitter. His shoulder bothered him all season, limiting him to primarily a DH role and contributing to a subpar .242/.320/.429 offensive performance with 23 homers and 62 RBI. "Coming back stronger in ‘18, love you all #RedSoxNation," Ramirez wrote. (Ctsy: @HanleyRamirez/Twitter)

Dustin Pedroia will decide within the next few days on a course of treatment for his left knee, according to a source familiar with his thinking. The Red Sox second baseman has seen specialists in New York and Boston. Surgery remains a possibility. "If you were to get it fixed, the recovery is a long time," Pedroia said last week. "So, I have a lot of things to weigh with the doctors and figure it out."

One day after he interviewed with Red Sox and one day before he meets Mets, praise keeps rolling in for Astros bench coach Alex Cora. "The guy is always bringing something to the table for the younger guys, which is great," Astros DH Carlos Beltran said. "He has good communication with the guys. He's always in the clubhouse getting to know the players, getting to know which buttons he could push on each player to make them go out there and play the game hard."

Astros' Cora interviews for Red Sox opening

Astros bench coach Alex Cora interviewed with the Red Sox on an off day during the ALCS. Cora will also have first-round interviews with the Mets and Tigers, sources told ESPN's Marly Rivera.

Earlier this season, Josh Reddick was telling me about the influence of Dustin Pedroia early in his career. "Once the [2011] season ended, he goes, 'Hey, Red, when you go to work out, we know how everybody wants big arms in this game. Don't worry about that. Focus on your legs. You'll hit for a lot more power.' It's ironic because I came out and hit 30 that next year [after being traded to the A's]. I was like, 'Man, he must really know what he's talking about.'"
