Thornwell: 'Hard work pays off' (1:47)

Think winning a blowout game to take your team to the Elite Eight warrants a rest? Not for South Carolina coach Frank Martin. He's in media row scouting the Gamecocks' next opponent -- either Wisconsin or Florida.

Martin credits fans in NCAA Tournament success (1:30)

Frank Martin is done with his press conference, but still addressing media. Literally 10 feet away, Florida players were leaving their locker room for starting lineups.

I asked Frank Martin how much easier it is to teach defense to blue collar kids like he has. "That's who we are. That's what it's all about. People talk about guys transferring out. They leave because they don't want to play as hard as Sindarius Thornwell or Duane Notice."

Swagger, defense and the fans' support -- PJ Dozier credits it all for the Gamecocks' big win over Baylor that propelled them to the Elite Eight.

Just walked back to South Carolina's locker room with Sindarius Thornwell. Asked him about the constant defensive pressure, even when Gamecocks were up big: "Oh yeah. We have to play that way. Coach (Frank Martin) won't allow us to let up at all."

Dana O'Neil ESPN Senior Writer

Sindarius Thornwell on defense, said he knew Baylor would make a run but also felt that "we were in their heads the whole time." Hard to argue

Coley Harvey ESPN Staff Writer

First comment from South Carolina's Frank Martin: "I want to thank the teams in the SEC for preparing us to play." He also credited this defensive intensity his team possessed tonight for the win. Players say they had a taste of history last weekend, and now they want even more.

PJ Dozier makes me think of a right handed Jalen Rose. Not as good of course. Yet? Not sure how tall he really is either.

Gamecocks hand Baylor its worst tourney loss

Sindarius Thornwell scored 24 points and seventh-seeded South Carolina cruised past third-seeded Baylor 70-50 on Friday night in the East Regional semifinals, the Bears' worst NCAA Tournament los

South Carolina's Cinderella run continues to Elite Eight (0:16)

Even Aaron Rodgers, at MSG to watch Wisconsin take on Florida after South Carolina-Baylor, has to join in on the cheers for Sindarious Thornwell when the Gamecocks' star exited the game. The SEC player of the year scored 24 points. USC closes out its 70-50 win with a standing ovation from the crowd

Dana O'Neil ESPN Senior Writer

South Carolina rolls on and I do mean rolls. The Gamecocks absolutely stopped Baylor in its tracks, the Bears completely flummoxed in the face of Frank Martin's defense. The same team that hasn't won an NCAA game since 1973 is now 40 minutes from the Final Four.

Dana O'Neil ESPN Senior Writer

Baylor is going to be hard pressed to near it's season low of points -62.

Dana O'Neil ESPN Senior Writer

Just as it was getting interesting Sindarius Thornwell decided that was enough of that. Big 3 stops a Baylor rally

Dana O'Neil ESPN Senior Writer

Baylor has rediscovered Lual-Acuil. Went to him early and effectively. He's getting more good looks at rim than anyone else.

Dana O'Neil ESPN Senior Writer

The ball is currently going in the basket for Baylor. See what happens when the half begins.

Coley Harvey ESPN Staff Writer

Forget being up 21, South Carolina is playing like it's down 21 and trying to mount a furious comeback. INTENSE defensive pressure, still.

ESPN Stats and Information

This is the first time South Carolina has led an NCAA Tournament game at halftime since 1971 against Fordham (Regional 3rd-Place Game). The Gamecocks failed to lead each of their last 13 NCAA Tournament games at halftime.
