Texas coach Tom Herman on pursuing a grad transfer at quarterback (LSU's Brandon Harris) even though he has promising young QBs Shane Buechele and Sam Ehlinger: "We gotta win. Lost seven games three straight years around here. If a grad transfer is better than those two and can beat them out, then we'll worry about their growth next spring." Herman said his QBs understand the situation and need for competition.

Texas QB Matthew Merrick has decided to leave the program and focus on academics. The third-year sophomore was the Longhorns' No. 3 QB this spring. We'll see if that means Jerrod Heard moves back from WR to QB in practice today. Texas is also pursuing LSU grad transfer Brandon Harris.

Texas safety Jason Hall sustained a "significant" hamstring injury and will miss the rest of spring practice, coach Tom Herman said. Hall was seen walking on crutches after Texas' second spring practice. Herman thinks he'll be OK to play this season.

There have been some intriguing developments already in the Big 12 this spring, including a wide-open quarterback competition at Texas.

Tom Herman had to pause his first spring practice and address his Texas team after they failed to follow instructions on a warmup drill. "What I said to them is everything matters," Herman said. "We were not going to end the stretch period until every single person on the team did their sprints perfectly right."
