We've now seen the new coaches on both sides of the Red River Rivalry at Big 12 media days. Herman wins the intensity battle, but Riley comes across as the more approachable guy and unflappable at the same time. Their contrasting demeanors will make for a nice subplot on Oct. 14 and in future games -- and will factor in their ability to sustain success at the league's flagship programs.

Tom Herman, on watching the doors to Texas open in recruiting to out-of-state schools, says he kicks himself a bit for pulling J.T. Barrett and others to Ohio State out of Texas. "When Texas is down," Herman said, "other teams smell blood in the water." But Herman says the challenge is no greater than in the past for schools in the state to recruit Texas high school talent.

Texas coach Tom Herman on QB Shane Buchele: "Shane has done a marvelous job of coming in this summer and really trying to be more of a leader." Herman noted that there "isn't any" depth behind Buchele and true freshman Shane Ehlinger and that former QB and converted WR Jerrod Heard will have packages to work at QB in case both of those quarterbacks were injured.
